This fish is considered to be an invasive species in the United States. The fishes binomial name is Channa Argus.
The features of a northern snakehead include a long dorsal fin with 40-50 rays, an anal fin with 31-32 rays, a small anteriorly depressed head, the eyes above the middle part of the upper jaw, a large mouth extending well beyond the eyes, and villiform teeth in bands, with canines on the lower jaw and palatines.
The female lays thousand of eggs during the breeding period. After the eggs are layed, both male and female northern snakeheads protect the eggs.
The northern snakehead originates from China, Russia, North Korea, South Korea.
Introduction into the ecosystem
the original breeding pair of the northern snakehead was traced by investigators with the Maryland department of natural resources to one specific intentional release. s
o someone released them intentionally into the wild.
Effects on the ecosystem
The northern snakehead has had positive and negative effects on the ecosystem. one positive effect is that they are important to the fishing industry providing lots of food and one negative effect is that the snakehead is a greedy primary predator that consumes a wide variety of prey, and they have high fertility so there are lots of them which put
s other animals and species in danger.
Control method
The Virginia State government signed House Bill 2752 or the Nonindigenous Aquatic Nuisance Species Act, which identifies several species including the snakehead as a Nonindigenous aquatic nuisance species and gives the Board of Game and Inland Fisheries the authority to declare other species as aquatic nuisance species. The bill makes it illegal to possess, import, sell, give, receive, transport or introduce these animals, but provides for permits for legitimate research.
lessons learned
from this invasion we can learn that we shouldn't play around with nature and that we need to watch what we release into our ecosystems because it can potentially be very fatal to the flow of our ecosystems.
what can we do?
we cant really do anything but hope it stops its invasion somehow because it is thriving in this environment we cant really stop it, it has become a part of this ecosystem so i cant do anything about it.
B3.5 Identify various factors related to human activity that have impacted on ecosystems (the introduction of invasive species) and explain how these factors affect the equilibrium in an ecosystem.
